Title: Greg Blake and Real Country

Location: Gig Harbor BoatShop

August 2nd at 7pm

Description:  Country  will  always be at the foundation of Greg Blake s interpretations of songs and lyrics.  Even classical voice training in college did not deter him from continuing in the rich traditions of Appalachian twang that you ll hear underlying his phrasing, and though Greg loves bluegrass, and considers himself a bluegrass singer, those audiences not as familiar with Monroe and Flatt love to hear the warmth, resonance and clarity when Blake delivers a ballad.

Having the privilege of traveling and performing with several different musicians, young and old, near and far, famous and yet to be discovered, Blake has found a stellar group of young musicians that have the same interest in and passion for preserving, promoting and performing an interesting marriage of musical genres. Greg, Nico, Miles and Isaac will be seen at any given time, traveling literally around the world performing a 45-50 minute set of blistering and/or mournful traditional bluegrass, and then turn around and dawn a Telecaster, sit down at the pedal steel and deliver an hour long set of Cash, Haggard, Jones and Buck Owens classic country music that will bring back memories of AM radio and Saturday night dances.

Title: IN THE SPIRIT Artist Gallery Talk

Location: Washington State History Museum

7-18, 6 pm

Duration: 1 hour

Description: Meet and hear from artist Samuel Stitt, Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, whose work Certificate of Degree of Caucasian Blood is featured in this juried exhibition of contemporary Native art. See his work as he describes his  inspiration and artistic practices.

Words from Stitt about Certificate of Degree of Caucasian Blood, 2019 "The issue of blood quantum and identity is quite complex contentious even. So, with this tongue-in-cheek piece, I d like to grab the attention of viewers or make them chuckle. I m hoping some folks ask, 'What is a Certificate of Degree of Caucasian Blood?' And that may even trigger some further curiosity. Some might even do a little Google searching and find that Native blood quantum is tracked and cataloged to an amazing degree. The model for this humorous card is based on the very real Certification of Degree of Indian Blood, or CDIB. Further, they may discover this rather tenuous method of blood quantum is currently used to define identity or status. Basically, this piece is saying, 'What if the shoe was on the other foot?' How many people on the face of the earth have their blood tracked by an official government agency in such a manner?"

Title: Scholarly Selections:  Reverend Sunya Pratt: The Life and Legacy of
an Early American Buddhist
Location: Washington State History Museum
1/17 6:30
Duration: 1.5 hours
Description: On April 23, 1936, Reverend Sunya Pratt was ordained as a
minister at the Tacoma Buddhist Temple. Local and national newspapers
described the ceremony, calling Rev. Pratt the  First White Buddhist
Priestess,  a label that later scholars have called into question. Yet at a
time when few Westerners converted to Buddhism, let alone became teachers,
Rev. Pratt joined a sangha--or spiritual community--of Japanese Americans.
Over the next 50 years, she became an important leader for Jodo Shinshu
Buddhists in the Puget Sound region. This talk will share a research project
that explores the legacy of Rev. Pratt within the context of the history of
Tacoma and American Buddhism.

intermediate classes in Celtic Harp this fall in Seattle and Olalla.  The
term will run for five weeks.

OLALLA classes begin TUESDAY, October 17 at the  Magic Hill  Studio on the

a variety of forms and modes along with ideas for arranging and
ornamentation.  The class fee for the five-week term is $150 plus a $10
registration fee. Harps are available for rent or purchase from the
instructor, Philip Boulding.

Students can register directly online at

Title: Glasnost & Goodwill: Citizen Diplomacy in the Northwest
Location: Washington State History Museum
October 7
Description: By the 1980s, there were thousands of nuclear weapons aimed at
the United States, and an equal number targeted at the Soviet Union. Only a
vague notion of  mutually assured destruction  stood between war and peace
for the world s superpowers. And yet, citizens did not sit idly by. Quietly
a movement formed, built by citizen diplomats who reached across the Pacific
to engage their neighbors, one conversation at a time. Washingtonians, in
particular, saw an opportunity to bring peace with their nearby neighbors
through business partnerships, sister-city relationships, and cultural
exchanges. .
Glasnost and Goodwill: Citizen Diplomacy in the Northwest is a fascinating,
in-depth exploration of how citizen diplomacy in Washington and the greater
Northwest contributed to the thawing of the Cold War. Visitors will learn
about people from Washington traveling behind the Iron Curtain with
thousands of letters expressing wishes for peace; elementary school children
competing cross-culturally in chess tournaments and swimming competitions;
fishermen supporting one another in international business ventures; and
finally, the 1990 Goodwill Games in Seattle and the greater Puget Sound
region a major undertaking that further cemented the special relationship
between Washington and the Soviet people.
Glasnost & Goodwill is brought to life through photographs, videos, oral
histories, and authentic artifacts that trace the rise of grassroots
diplomacy in the region from the early 1930s to the collapse of the Soviet
Union in 1991, and beyond. On view through Sunday, January 21, 2018.
Be among the first to see Glasnost & Goodwill: Citizen Diplomacy in the
Northwest at the preview party, Thursday, October 5, 5:30-8:00 PM; free for
WSHS members, $15 for nonmembers; email Julia.White@wshs.wa.gov, or call
253-798-5894 for reservations.

Cedar that is included with the workshop fee. With narrower and longer

paddles to be easier on the body and shoulders. First used thousands of

driftwood. They are often used as spare paddles strapped to a kayak.

Title: Local Real Estate team partners with the community to send Treats to Troops.
November 3 is the Great Candy Trade-in to Support Our Troops

Date: Nov. 1-3 between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 5:00

Location: Canterwood Real Estate team Berkshire Hathaway office, located at 5727 Baker
Way in Gig Harbor (off 54th Ave., outside the Baker Way gate of Canterwood).

The Canterwood Real Estate team in Gig Harbor North continues to focus on
building community. This year, they are joining with the community in a
Halloween candy trade-in to support local and overseas soldiers. All of the
collected candy will be sent in care packages to the troops, while in
exchange for the sweet treats, all participating families will receive free
kids' meals generously donated by the Hub at Gig Harbor.
"This is such a great opportunity to give back and remember our servicemen
and women, local and overseas, who are missing their families during the
holidays," says Russell Tanner of the Canterwood Real Estate team. Children
are also encouraged to write a letter to a Hero, thanking them for their
service. Those letters will be included in the care packages mailed to units
stationed in Iraq. More perishable candies like chocolate will be donated to
the barracks at Joint Base Louis-McChord.

"This is such a great teachable moment for our children," says Mike Drake,
another member of the Canterwood Real Estate team. "We're reinforcing
generosity and gratitude for others' service. I'm sure the kids' dentists
will thank us, too!"

Gig Harbor residents are encouraged to gather up those leftover treats and
email info@canterwood.com to ensure that their free meal coupons will be
ready when they drop off their candy. Candy should be brought to the
Canterwood Real Estate team Berkshire Hathaway office, located at 5727 Baker
Way in Gig Harbor (off 54th Ave., outside the Baker Way gate of Canterwood).
Candy may be dropped off Nov. 1-3 between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 5:00
p.m. As an added convenience, the Canterwood Real Estate team will trade out
candy from Canterwood residents' porches if they sign up prior to Nov. 3.

The Canterwood Real Estate team consists of three real estate agents and
community members. Russell Tanner is a longtime Canterwood resident and
local Canterwood expert who has been the primary developer of the
neighborhood. Mike Drake is the former golf pro at the Canterwood Golf and
Country Club. Alesha Beckel, a Canterwood native who still lives in and
gives back to the community, rounds out the team. Pat Nagle of the Hub at
Gig Harbor is known for his family-friendly restaurants and his commitment
to bringing the community together at events such as the Gig Harbor Film
Festival.

This year there will be more opportunities to shop, attend more workshops, participate in more public rituals, and see more presentations! Central Puget Sound Pagan Pride organizers expect more than 2,000 people to attend this year's festivities.

Pride-goers can watch live entertainment and most importantly make connections with their community and enjoy fellowship.

Pagan Pride presents children activities, public rituals, drum circles, various classes and merchant booths. For Pagans, the event introduces participants and organizers to other like-minded individuals. For non-Pagans, it provides a bridge to learn about other earth-based spiritual paths and the opportunity to attend a public ritual. Those who are interested in Paganism can connect with teachers and groups, or attend workshops on many Pagan related topics.

Central Puget Sound Pagan Pride Day (CPSPPD) is a part of the worldwide Pagan Pride Project, www.paganpride.org. Finding Pagan groups on Yahoo, Meet-up.com, Facebook, and going through the myriad of web pages on the topic of Seattle/Tacoma/Olympia Paganism/Witchcraft/Earth-based Spirituality would take DAYS!  The time for hiding in the  broom closet  are fading away, and the Central Puget Sound Pagan community grows daily.
